Why do you need to choose a blog niche?

Before you head out to find your blogging niche, you need to understand why choosing the right blogging niche is important.

Imagine this:

Her hobby is gardening and you have searched online how to grow roses with stems. “A blog appeared that resolved your doubts with detailed step-by-step instructions on how to grow roses with stems.

You're impressed … to the point where you've subscribed to the email newsletter to be informed of future new posts.

A day later you will receive an email with a post about how you can get twins involved in the summer.

It's been a bummer since you've been single, but you still choose to ignore it and stay subscribed.

Two weeks later you will receive another notification of a new post talking about a political issue.

What would you do now

If you notice the wide variety of blog topics covered on this blog (most of which are outside of your zone of interest), then opt out for good.

That's how important it is to choose a blog topic or focus on what to blog about.

A blog that covers a wide variety of topics is like a jack of all trades and a master of nothing.

It doesn't attract loyal audiences who are desperate to learn from what you blog and buy products you recommend.

In addition to providing credibility, having a targeted niche blog will help you sell more as the core strategy for content for a specific audience would be laser focused.

Why Choose a Blog Niche? 4 advantagesBenefits of Choosing a Blog Niche

Other Benefits Of Choosing A Blog Niche:

  • A niche makes your blog understandable and easy to follow.
  • Expertise = ⭡ ranking: It strengthens the current authority of your blog (authority over a single topic) which helps with search engine optimization (SEO). This means that a single niche blog has a better chance of ranking on Google than a multi-niche blog for a given query.
  • Better monetization: A well-defined target group is easy to sell as a blog whose readers are not interested in a particular topic.
  • Audience converting: Since niche blogs talk about a specific topic, you can leave the uninterested and only interested readers will follow you. These are the readers who want your advice, tips, and opinions to help solve their problems. Hence, they are more likely to become your fans and subscribers to the community.

What is a blog niche?

Wondering what a blog niche is?

A blog niche is the topic or theme that your blog articles are based on.

For example; You could ask me, "What do I like?"

I would say, "I like to listen to music."

So “music” is a niche. It helps specify what I like from a pool of other things like games, watching movies, playing sports, reading books, etc.

You could ask me again, "What kind of music do I like?"

I would say I love listening to rock music! This again indicates what I particularly like.

If I decide to start a blog about what I like, the niche can be based on music or specifically rock music (which can be a sub-niche of the music theme).

Later on, I can use my blog to attract the attention of viewers who have similar interests as me, i. H. Music or rock music, in particular.

Take the example of my blog …

… My blog DigitalGYD talks about blogging and publishes blogging tips and strategies to start and grow your blogs. So DigitalGYD's niche is blogging.

Similarly, AndroidAuthority.com talks about Android phones, so their niche is the smartphone niche, or more precisely the Android smartphones.

Now that you have a clear idea of how important niches are on your blog, let's dig deeper into how you can do this efficiently.

Market versus sub-market versus niche versus micro-niche

Before we talk about blogging niches, we need to talk about where “niche” stands in the hierarchy.

Ever heard of the saying "think big”?

In niche research we have exactly the opposite: "think small”.

This section will answer that and prevent you from looking at a market as a niche or vice versa.

Make sure you go through it to get a clear idea of where to find your niche sweet spot in order to create a profitable niche website / blog.

Chart showing market versus nicheMarket versus sub-market versus niche versus micro-niche

What is a market?

The market is a very broad or extensive segment on a specific topic or aspect of the business.

For example,

  • health
  • wealth
  • automobile
  • technology
  • relationship

Did you notice?

It is obvious that these are all very broad topics that can be further broken down into smaller categories for better focus.

If you try to start a blog on these topics, you will inevitably fail because:

  • Fierce competition ensues: consider competing with media group The Balance, or consider competing for business with Forbes.
  • Lack of resources: Starting a blog for an entire market requires huge investments in content production, SEO, team management websites, etc.
  • Low profitability: Compared to niche blogs, the markets have a loose target group and therefore low conversion rates.
  • You stay in the red ocean: We're going to talk about why the Red Ocean is dangerous for your blog and why you should use the Blue Ocean Strategy to find your unique blogging niche.

What is a sub-market?

A submarket is a subsection of a market that focuses on a condensed and a single aspect of a market.

Below are some sub-market ideas:

  • Health " Weight loss, diet, sexual wellbeing, mental health
  • Wealth " Investments, loans. Budgets, business
  • Relationships " Dating, marriage, sex

These seem tight enough to make a perfect niche for your blog, but they aren't.

What is a niche?

A niche is a specialized area of a submarket that meets the interests and requirements of a specific target group area.

The next niche in the hierarchy is the niche that we need to focus on today. Niches are sufficiently narrow as markets and sub-markets.

If you pick the right niche, there is a fair chance your blog will be successful (assuming you've put in the hard work it takes to grow a blog).

Unlike micronic niches (see below), niches provide enough space to expand your blog to increase the possibilities for topics covered.

What is a micronic niche?

A microniche is a very limited topic that often revolves around a single product / topic.

For example,

Bestairfryer.com would be a good example of a micro-niche blog focusing on air fryers.

Or beststandingdesks.com would be another example of a micro-niche blog on standing desks.

Micro-niche blogs have very little competition and are easier to evaluate and bank (monetize).

However, if you are thinking about long term blogging, this is probably not the way to go. Micro-niche blogs are very limited and you will run out of content ideas very soon.

Another disadvantage of micro-niches over niche blogs is that with limited content options, you also limit sales growth.

Now that we have looked at types of blog niches …

… Let's discuss how to find a profitable niche for your blog

Shall we?

It is now time to speak to the elephant in the room …

How do you decide what to blog about?

In this section I am going to show you 11 Ways to Generate Profitable Niche Blog Ideas.

1 Take what I'm supposed to blog about quizzes

The best way to choose a niche for long-term blogging is to analyze your personality, interests, expertise, and skills.

The resulting blog niche ideas will actually inspire you to work on it and get results.

How to take a quiz to choose your niche

Take a piece of paper (or a note taking app on your PC / smartphone) and answer the following questions.

If you find multiple answers, write them down on paper and don't limit your options.

Here are the five questions that make up the quiz I'm supposed to blog about:

  1. What are the things or areas that you are interested in? (Like social media, photography, cooking, etc. Don't be stingy, choose at least 15-20 options for this.)
  2. What are you really good at from the above answers? (Skills that you think will be appreciated by your friends and family)
  3. Which of these options do you enjoy doing the most? (You may be good at photography, but cooking is your passion. Order the options from question 2 in the order you love them.)
  4. Of all the options you have from question 3, which options have some demand? (How did you read about it online or in magazines? Do friends and family ask you for help with this? For example, they ask how to get the best lighting for a selfie or how to easily make French toast?)
  5. Will someone pay me for my skills? (This part of the niche finder quiz will decide if the list of interests you choose is profitable.

You will notice …

When you run out of ideas, your options are fewer. Do not worry. Give yourself a good half day and you will see that you have ideas that did not occur to you before for the niche questionnaire.

What if I don't have specific answers to the above questions?

Do not worry!

2 Use Amazon to find blog niche ideas. Here's how!

Amazon is an excellent source for finding profitable niche ideas in affiliate marketing and other ways, and I personally use it a lot to come up with niche ideas.

Amazon affiliate websites are one of the best niches for blogging. However, you can also use them to come up with blogging ideas with other monetization options.

There is a two-way approach to this. although both are similar and have their own advantages.

Approach 1: check Amazon's full store directory

Amazon sells a huge amount of products. is based on multiple categories and can sometimes be difficult for consumers to find.

Hence, the full business directory helps buyers review many sub-categories and choose what they need on a single page.

The Amazon Full Store Directory can help you discover profitable blogging niches The Amazon Full Store Directory can help you discover profitable blogging niches

The screenshot above confirms that Amazon.com is based in the US. However, you can check your country-based Amazon website.

This page has hundreds of different product categories to target as a blog niche.

Go through them all or look into the head category that interests you to find multiple niche ideas.

These options can serve as your niche ideas that you can further refine to create blog topics.

Approach 2: Amazon bestseller list

Whenever I want to start a product or a product category-based website; I always check the Amazon bestseller list.

The basic use of the Amazon bestseller list is to rank the best-selling products on Amazon depending on the main categories and several sub-categories within them.

Amazon's bestseller site offers hidden, yet profitable, niche ideasThe Amazon Best Sellers page can help you choose a niche that you are passionate about

As soon as you open Amazon's bestseller page, several header categories are listed in the left sidebar.

Since I'm interested in computers, I click on the "Computers and Accessories" link.

A new page opens, on which several sub-categories are displayed again.

Later I will click on "Computer Accessories and Peripherals" as that interests me further.

This will open several product categories again. Here I choose "Gaming Hardware" and then "Gaming Keyboards" as the blog niche for this tutorial.

Profitable niche what?

You can try this approach to deepen your niche ideas as Amazon lists even the smallest of the smallest sub-categories on its website.

Second, you will get popular product ideas in this category that you can use to monetize your website later through the Amazon Associates program.

If the above strategy doesn't suit your needs or if you want to research further, my next strategy is sure to blow your mind.

3 Use Wikihow.com for multiple niche blog ideas

Wikihow.com is a very popular website that has tons of guides on how to complete simple and complex tasks related to anything and everything.

Stick with it and I'll show you how to generate hundreds of blog niche ideas (and there are tons of categories!) From every single category on Wikihow.

How to Find More Blog Niche Ideas Using Wikihow:

  1. Go to Wikihow.com.
  2. Move the mouse pointer to "Browse" in the header.

  4. Scroll through the categories to find the ones that interest you and click on them.
  5. I will choose "Computers and Electronics" as that interests me.
  6. Once the page is open, you can view a full list of the articles published on the site on these categories if you prefer. go through them.

I know at first glance it might seem a bit daunting to look at all of these categories. but trust me; If you go through them one by one, it doesn't seem like a complex task.

The best thing here is; Once you find a topic that interests you, you can click on it and find a range of article ideas for your niche site.

Sounds good?

4th Checkout PayPal's index for business categories and sub-categories

Another smart step you can take to make blog niche selection easier is to browse PayPal's business categories page.

Find the most profitable blog niches using PayPal's business categories and sub-categories

It lists over 300 possible business options that can give you a head start in finding a higher-level niche.

You can further use this list to refine and develop sub-niche ideas or blog topics that work.

5 Use James Altucher's Idea Sex Formula to find hidden niches

James Altucher's idea of Sex Formula is a kickass way to discover new and profitable blogging niches with low competition.

Here is a back story to help you understand the formula:

Stan Weston pondered how girls liked dolls and boys loved cars and guns (action).

He fused these two ideas to create a doll for boys based on a soldier (doll) with a weapon (action).

He called it GI Joe, which is now a billion dollar franchise from Hasbro.

The idea was simple:

  1. Take two ideas that have nothing to do with each other
  2. Bring them together to find a new, undiscovered product

You can use this exact formula to find new or under-competitive blog niches. This will also help you create an independent identity for your blog.

All you have to do is:

  1. Make two lists of unrelated niches that are in demand (you can also use submarkets).
  2. Amalgamate or combine them to find hidden, unexplored blog topics.
  3. Keyword research to find more micronic and blogging ideas.

For example,

  • Health + Food = Healthy Eating or Keto Diet or Paleo Diet or Low Carbohydrate Diet
  • Mother Life + Business = Mother Life Business or home work for mothers or mother entrepreneurs.

The possibilities are endless, aren't they?

Every year, Google publishes a report on the trends or topics that most people have searched for all year round.

The "Year in Search" list is informative in and of itself and gives you an overview of the topics that excited people, how their thinking developed and much more.

Here's how to choose blog niches where you can make money with Google's Year In SearchHere's how to choose blog niches where you can make money with Google Year In Search

Since we are bloggers, you can also use this list to find out which topics have been searched for the most over the past year.

Most of these topics will continue to have a lot of traffic for the next year. You can use this data to find niches that you can refine using a keyword research tool to find even more sub- or micro-niches.

Be sure to Validate your niche idea (We'll discuss how below) before we finalize it.

7th Use ClickBank to find blog niches and microniche for affiliate websites

ClickBank is an affiliate marketplace with a wide variety of products for sale. You can use this as an opportunity to find niches and micro-niches in your industry.

Another benefit of using ClickBank as a niche idea generator is that you get a validated list of working niches.

How do you ask

Because ClickBank only has categories that contain products that you can promote and sell. And when someone creates a product for a certain niche, they certainly have some market demand.

You can also click on a specific microniche to view affiliate products and their sales.

Here's how to get niche ideas from ClickBank:

  1. Go to ClickBank.com
  2. In the navigation, click on Affiliate Marketplace
  3. View and expand different product categories on the left.

8th Use Udemy to find unlimited niche blogging ideas

Udemy like Amazon or ClickBank can open up new opportunities to create blog niches.

Udemy is a learning platform with over 100,000 online courses in every imaginable subject.

Udemy has a large list of courses (which you can use as a market or sub-market to generate more niche ideas from them).Udemy has a large list of courses (which you can use as a market or sub-market to generate more niche ideas from them).

Not only can this be used to find niches and micro-niches, but also to check the popularity of your niche based on the number of students and people who rated the course.

How to Use Udemy for Niche Research:

  1. Go to the Udemy home page
  2. Hover over the Categories option in the navigation menu.
  3. Select a market and hover over it to open niches and micro-niches under that market.
  4. You can also click an option that you think is a good choice for your blog niche and view the courses below it. Udemy displays the number of students who have taken courses for that particular topic. You can also view courses and see the number of ratings to see a course's popularity.

9 Use Pat Flynn's 777 method

Pat Flynn is a leading blogger who grew his blogging business to 7 digits and his 777 Method for Finding Niche Blog Ideas is something that works every time.

Generate Niche Ideas That Make Money Using Pat Flynn's 777 MethodGenerate Niche Ideas That Make Money Using Pat Flynn's 777 Method

  3. Plug the 10 resulting elements into a keyword research tool (like KWFinder, which is free to use) or SEMrush (use this free 14-day trial coupon from SEMrush) to expand them further into more micronic niches.

This method works even better if you know your target audience.

For example,

Once you have a basic idea of who you want to be the reader of your blog, you can add the 777 method to find their passions, fears, and problems, and blog topics they would like to read about.

10 Use forum directories to find under-competitive blog niche ideas

Forum directories are a very efficient and often overlooked way of finding niches to talk about.

You will be surprised at the amount of data they give you and will often discover niches that you never thought existed. Most of them with huge audiences!

Here's how I use forums to discover hidden blog niches:

  1. Go to Find A Forum
  2. Or click here for the direct list of the 100 best forums on their list.
  3. Click on forums that interest you to learn more about them, including number of posts, discussion topics, and more.
  4. FindAForum also reveals top keywords, demonization strategies, and related forums for exploring the rabbit hole.
  5. If you are tired of the competitive niches, this is a good idea to start exploring some new profitable niche markets.

Pro tip: Use an SEO tool like SERPstat or SEMrush (both offer free trials so you don't have to invest money) to find out the top ranking pages of these forums and the keywords that are bringing them the most organic traffic (from Google).

11 Use newspapers, magazines, and shopping malls as niche research tools

Do you need more inspiration to decide what to blog about?

Aside from the methods above, you can always use newspapers and magazines, and even stroll your local malls to find niche market opportunities and niche products to blog about.

As I mentioned earlier, finding niche ideas is not always easy. Sometimes you can find great ideas for your blogging niche if you aren't looking for one.

Once you have an extensive list of niche blog blog ideas that interest you; Go to the next section.

How to Decide What to Blog About: Niche Validation

Once you've worked your way through the 10 methods above, you must surely have a long list of blogging niches to work on.

This is where confusion creeps in. You might be thinking what to blog about?

Not all of them might interest you and not all of them would be profitable.

Because of this, you need to validate your niche ideas and choose 4-5 ideas on your list that interest you the most.

Picking up a blog niche without checking its potential is the biggest mistake beginners make when blogging.

These niche ideas should be the ones that pique your interest right away, experienced in them, and something that you can easily write a variety of articles about.

Now is the time to test your blog niches and find out which is the best niche for blogging.

The first idea here is to find a collection of blog topics (commonly known as keywords) that you can use to write articles on your blog.

The steps below will help you understand if your niche ideas are viable and which ones you should be working on.

Google Trends can give you an idea of how popular a topic or keyword is over time.

Google Trends has been providing search trends for a keyword since 2004 so you can get a complete picture of the niche you've chosen.

You can even get data based on a country or sub-region.

This data can be used to check how popular your niche is over a given period of time and what the trend is when looking for it.

You can also compare two or more niches to see which is producing more promising results.

Take, for example, two related niche ideas for health and nutrition:

While both seem to interest you and both have met all of the criteria of your passion, skill, demand, and profit, Google Trends reveal a completely different story.

An analysis of the demand-demand trends for the keto diet versus the paleo diet shows that the keto diet is far more popular and has a sustained growth spurt while the paleo diet is a dying curve.

How to Validate Your Niche Using Google Trends Keto Diet Vs Paleo Diet (Which Niche Should You Go For?)

Paleo definitely doesn't seem like a good niche to start a long term blog.

You can take it a step further to check the profitability of your niche by filtering the above niche to show Google Shopping Trends for both.

Niche validation with Google trendsNiche validation with Google Shopping Trends

As you can see above, Google shopping trends suggest that buying intent is very different in both niches and niches The keto diet is a clear winner.

For this reason, I highly recommend using Google Trends to check your niche before you even start blogging or even register your domain name on it.

If video is your thing, here is a fantastic tutorial on using Google Trends to come up with cutting edge topic ideas.

2 Use Ubersuggest to find comprehensive article ideas

Ubersuggest is a tool that you will frequently use for keyword research in your blogging career, and it's also a great tool for finding article ideas.

I chose "Gaming Keyboards" as my niche for this tutorial. So I will continue with it.

Was bedeutet das?

This means if you’re targeting ads, affiliate products to promote or simply sell your services, the second niche might be more profitable.

Also, a niche that has a decent SEO competition always has the types of blogs that make money unlike one that no one searches for.

Blog niches that make money are usually the ones with most competition.

Currently, there are 3 popular ways to monetize your blog:

  • Display Ad Network (Google Adsense, Media.net, Propeller Ads)
  • Amazon Associates Program
  • Affiliate Marketing

Or, you can read my guide on how to make money with a blog for beginners to discover more ways to monetize your blog.

Remember the sites that I told you to note down above?

Check those sites once again and see what monetization strategy they are using.

  • Are they using ads on their website?
  • What products are they promoting?
  • Are they promoting any affiliate offers? Like a course or online service

Remember about Amazon’s Bestsellers list that I asked you to take a rough look?

You can again take a proper look and check popular products within that niche that you can easily promote on your blog.

Same goes for ClickBank.

You get the idea, right?

Moving on, with the help of Google, you can also check various affiliate program related to your niche:

Try queries like “(Your Niche) affiliate programs” or “Best Affiliate program for (Your Niche)” (without quotes).

For example, Gaming Keyboards Affiliate Program or Best Affiliate Program for Gaming Keyboards.

Using Google to find affiliate programs to monetize your blogUsing Google to find affiliate programs to monetize your blog

If a lot of things confuse you…

Don’t get hesitant because there are always going to be things that you’ll learn along the way and even master them.

Currently, there are hardly any niches where you can’t make any money from.
