Modern Wood Carving

Aron Demetz

Aron Demetz's contemporary wood carving incorporates traditional techniques and modern materials to create art pieces with an ethereal physical appearance. His work employs three methods that include carving, burning and covering with resin to create an interpretation and reinterpretation of the material's essence and appearance. His work features human characters that have strong moral and spiritual values. Their faces and bodies appear to be purified.

Michael Pacher

Austrian artist Michael Pacher combines wood carving and painting. The entirety of his life was spent in the South Tyrol region. His woodwork is an excellent illustration of the German Gothic style. His artworks are a reflection of the Italian Renaissance. His paintings were among the first to taught German-speaking artists techniques used in Renaissance art. The most famous work of his is the St Wolfgang Altarpiece. It is the biggest European altarpiece in the world.

The wood sculpture of Pacher shows the influence of the northern Italian painting and sculpture. It has many resemblances with Andrea Mantegna. But, his fusion of Northern Gothic realism and Italian Renaissance styles allowed him to create a distinctive style of painting.

Jorg Zurn

Jorg Zurn's life-sized wooden sculpture of Archangel Mike was sold at $250,000 in New York at an art exhibition in 2002. Hans Zurn, the Elder was the artist's oldest child. Jorg Zurn was an apprentice to his father and also educated in various workshops in the southern part of Bavaria.

Zurn was Zurn was a German Baroque artist who carved altars as well as other items of the church. The five-story High Altar of the Mother of God, which has five stories, is among Zurn's masterpieces. It is situated within the Church of Saint Nicholas (uberlingen). The altar's style of sculpture has elements from early Baroque however, it is an energizing design that is similar to German Gothic sculpture.

Veit Stoss

Barbara Hepworth

Barbara Hepworth is one the most influential artists of her time. She was a resident of St Ives in the 1930s along with her most close acquaintances. Despite the fact that she was unable to carve her own carvings, she continued to work on her drawings every night. Drawings were a means to express her thoughts in a way that she could not express with three dimensions. The drawings were influenced by strings-like elements and colours, and were designed to achieve a mathematical harmony.

Hepworth was in the process of being inspired by her fascination as a child with the natural forms and the textures. Her love of landscapes informed her work later on. In 1943, she stated that her work was the result of the natural landscape. Unsatisfied with flat backgrounds She took photographs of her work in the natural surroundings.
