Fan-controlled soccer indicators as companions earlier than the primary season progressive
Sports are becoming more and more interactive, giving fans more opportunities to connect with their favorite teams and participate via fantasy leagues, legalized sports betting and esports. Now the new Fan Controlled Football League (FCF) plans to go one step further.
The indoor soccer league, which is scheduled to start in 2021, aims to bring the fans under control in every respect. You can see the latest games in real time, just like a Madden NFL game. You will decide who starts, who is traded and what the jerseys look like.
The league is an interesting experiment, and brand partners have already signed up without ever seeing a fan-controlled snap. On December 3rd, the FCF announced a partnership with Champion.
"Champion is a brand that encompasses sport and innovation, so we're excited to partner with an organization that is redefining football," said Tyler Lewison, general manager of Champion Teamwear.
The old sportswear brand will use the logos designed by members of the FCF community and create jerseys for each of the four teams (with names like Zappers, Wild Aces, Glacier Boyz and Beasts). Today the FCF also announced a deal with Progressive.
"By creating this league from scratch, we can also create the brand integrations from scratch," said Jennifer Rottenberg, CMO of Fan Controlled Football. "It's a blessing and a curse. We don't have to pull sponsorships out of the bucket of traditional assets that normally go into a (sports sponsorship deal), but people are used to looking at these packages when they pitch decks We haven't. We have conversations. It's a more complicated sale, but after brainstorming we came back with four ideas and Progressive loved them all. "
The uniqueness of the league leads to additional opportunities. The Progressive deal includes a branding moment called Progressive Fifth Down. Once per game, fans can be given the opportunity to vote on a game where they would like to take an additional down after a failed fourth down conversion. It's additional insurance – a good link to the branded category – to take the risk of a fourth failure.
There's also FCF Protection by Progressive, a weekly segment interviewing offensive linemen, the built-in insurance policy for quarterbacks. The outstanding coverage of the game focuses on defense games and the Progressive Snapshot Badge offers perks, rewards and access to premium content.
"Progressive is committed to innovation, getting people to look for something different," said Rottenberg. "In Season 1, they're not going to commit to an eight-figure deal. They want to test it and see how it goes. Hopefully it's going great and they want to come back to get bigger, better, and more."
While the FCF is testing a new format for the sport, the league has had no problem winning big names. Team owners include former NFL stars Richard Sherman and Marshawn Lynch, hip-hop trendsetter Quavo, and former boxing champ Mike Tyson. They also have MLB players, pro wrestlers, and YouTube stars in various owner roles.
The six-week season begins in February 2021 at the FCF Customs Department in Atlanta. The games will be fast-paced, with only seven players on each side compared to eleven in the NFL and college football. The field is also shrunk in half from 100 yards long to just 50 yards, dropping the width from 53 yards to 35 yards. The result is quarterbacks that can easily toss the ball into the end zone from anywhere on the field with less space to work with for the remote play callers and a football style similar to the now-defunct Arena Football League.
