The Weeknd will host the Pepsi Tremendous Bowl LV halftime present
Canadian superstar The Weeknd, famous for his three-time Grammy-winning vocal falsettos, will be hosting the 2021 Super Bowl halftime show.
Pepsi, the NFL, and Jay-Z's entertainment agency Roc Nation released the news today following a series of teasers posted on The Weeknd's social accounts late Wednesday.
Pepsi vp of Marketing Todd Kaplan called the halftime show "one of the most anticipated appearances of the year" and said in a statement that the brand is "excited to welcome The Weeknd on stage".
“After a year without live music, we can't wait to see The Weeknd, with his limitless talent and creativity, transform the world's largest stage and deliver an unforgettable performance that will be remembered for years to come "Added Kaplan.
Super Bowl LV will be held on February 7th at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida and will be broadcast live on CBS.
This is Pepsi's 10th year as the title sponsor of the halftime show and its 19th year as an NFL partner. Last year the show featured headlines from Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. Previous acts were Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Prince and Madonna.
"We all grow up with the greatest acts in the world playing the Super Bowl and you can only dream of being in that position," The Weeknd said in a statement. "I am humble, honored and thrilled to be the center of this infamous stage this year."
Production company DPS will produce the show's broadcast, while Roc Nation and actor Jesse Collins will serve as executive producers. Hamish Hamilton, who has directed the Super Bowl halftime show every year since 2010, will direct. Roc Nation will also act as the entertainment strategic advisor for the live performance.
Weeknd's 2020 album After Hours is the most streamed R&B album of all time, followed by his 2016 album Starboy. With more than 51 billion listeners, he's also one of the most streamed artists on Spotify. The Weeknd was named one of the Most Influential People of the Year by Time Magazine with a tribute to Elton John, who described the artist as "a mysterious figure at a time when mysteries are rare in pop."
"The Weeknd introduced its own sound," Jay-Z said in a statement. "His soulful uniqueness has defined a new generation of greatness in music and art."
