The job of Google is to understand, index, and evaluate the content of the web. It is impossible to do this without mechanisms to deal with non-ideal circumstances like pages without H1 Keywords.

That is, every little bit helps SEO– It is therefore helpful to follow best practices whenever possible.

Here are 9 best practices for H1 Keywords:

  1. To use H1 Page title tags

  5. Use only one H1 per page
  6. To keep H1 Tags short
  7. Style headings for the hierarchy
  8. Include your target keyword
  9. Do H1 Tags convincing

To use H1 Page title tags

Google says, "Put the title of your article in a prominent place above the article body, such as in a

While many website platforms and CMSIf you do this by default, it can be overridden for certain topics.

If you're curious about how your topic is handling this, the easiest way to check is to right-click the title in your browser and select "Review". If the highlighted part contains

, then it's wrapped in a H1 Label.

If you are not feeling well HTML, install Ahrefs SEO Toolbar and check out the free on-page report to see your H-tags, including yours H1.

  3. Go to On page report
  4. Scroll to "H1 Setup ”diagram
  5. Click the green part of the pie chart

Use upper and lower case for H1s

The title is case-sensitive for all words that contain four or more letters.

If your CMS uses page titles for both H1 Tags and title tags, which are case-sensitive for page titles, keep the search results looking neat. They are usually just forum posts that use lowercase or sentence letters.

Map title tags to H1s

Google says you should match your title tag with yours H1.

Most CMSLike WordPress, you do this automatically, but it is possible to set the title tag as something other than that H1 with a SEO Plugin like Yoast.

The most common reason for this is if your page title is for a H1but too long for the title tag.

For example our title and H1 are a little different for this post:

If your title and H1 are a little different, but cast from the same mold as described above, that's fine. When your title is dramatically different from yours H1Probably worth getting them back in line.

Why? Searchers are partly sold through their title tag in the SERPs. When greeted with a completely different and unrelated title (H1) on the side they feel betrayed.

Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is a free search for mismatched H1s and title tags.

  1. Sign up for Ahrefs Webmaster Tools
  2. Crawl your website in Site Audit
  3. Go to On page report
  4. Scroll to "H1 Setup ”diagram
  5. Click the green area on the pie chart
  6. Look for title tags and H1s that are drastically mismatched

Here is a mismatched title and H1 for our guide to anchor text:

The title tag is angled around a definition, while the H1 is angled around a study. It is possible that after clicking through this page, searchers may feel a little betrayed or confused. So it probably makes sense to stick to a single point of view.

If your website has a lot of pages, sort the report in Ahrefs' Site Audit by organic traffic to prioritize changes. There's little point in worrying about mismatched titles and H1s if your page isn't getting any organic traffic at all.

Use a H1 Tag on every important page

Assuming your page title should be in a H1 Tag, it goes without saying that you should be using one H1 on every important page. After all, every page has a title.

If you want to find pages with missing or empty H1s:

  1. Open a free account with Ahrefs Webmaster Tools
  2. Crawl your website in Site Audit
  3. Go to On page report
  4. Scroll to "H1 Setup ”diagram
  5. Click the red area on the pie chart

You can see above that some of our pages are missing H1s.

Is that best practice? Not really. However, it's also unlikely to be a big deal since those sides of you aren't particularly important SEO Perspective. It's just blog homepages and archive pages that only attract branded traffic anyway.

While our developers were able to "fix" this in minutes, it's probably not worth wasting your time as the pages look perfect to visitors – and that's all that matters here.

Use only one H1 per page

Google's John Mueller says using multiple H1s per page is fine.

If you use HTML5This is strictly true. There is nothing technically wrong with using multiple H1 Tags in different sections.

For example this HTML5 Side has four H1 Tags and is technically ok.

Apples are fruits.

They taste great.

Red apples are sweeter than green ones.

Apples come in different colors.

Almost all modern browsers render this correctly and display it H1 Tags nested in

Elements according to their nesting level. That means H1s in the first

will look like H2s, H1s nested in another

will look like H3s, etc.

But also with HTML5, W3C recommends that you use "Headings appropriately ranked for the nesting level of the section".

For example:

Apples are fruits.

They taste great.

Red apples are sweeter than green ones.

Apples come in different colors.

This is because some older browsers have trouble rendering things correctly without explicitly displaying them CSS Regulate.

But what if your website is not in use? HTML5?

John Mueller says several times H1 Tags are still ok:

Regardless of whether you use HTML5 or not, have several H1 Elements on a page is fine.

As this is not the best practice of W3C Why is this advice from Google?

Answer: Because they developed mechanisms to solve the general problem of multiple H1s on a website.

So, although it probably doesn't matter that much SEO whether you use one or more H1 We still believe that this is the best practice for most websites.

You can check if there are multiple pages H1 Tags on your website for free in Ahrefs Webmaster Tools.

  1. Open a free account with Ahrefs Webmaster Tools.
  2. Crawl your website with Site Audit
  3. Go to On page report
  4. Scroll to "H1 Setup ”diagram
  5. Click the yellow area in the pie chart

To keep H1 Tags short

Lots CMSUse the same copy for yours H1 and title tag. If this is the case for you, unless you want to write a unique title tag for each page and post, keep your page titles short.

How short? The general rule of thumb is 70 characters or less.

Here is a page that breaks this rule:

The H1 There are 80 characters on this page, which looks perfect on the page itself. Because WordPress uses the same copy for the title tag, it will be truncated in search results.

We could solve this problem by setting the title tag to a shorter version of H1 Label. But once we'd tried making a shorter title, we wouldn't have this problem.

Style headings for the hierarchy

Headings are used to create a hierarchy on a web page. As the H1 Tag is usually the most important heading on the page, yours CSS Styling should reflect that.

In other words, the H1 should be the most famous tag on the site.

This may seem obvious, but there are many websites with little noticeable differences between H1s and H2s.

Include your target keyword

Google's John Mueller said in 2020:

And when it comes to text on a page, a heading is a really strong signal that that part of the page is dealing with that topic.

Given that the H1 Usually the page title is enclosed. This is arguably the most important heading on the page. So it usually makes sense to include your main keyword to make the subject of the page doubly clear to both Google and searchers.

This is something we do for pretty much all of our blog posts.

Does it always make sense to do this? Of course not.

Sometimes it is better to use a close variant of your target keyword for readability.

For example, the main keyword for this post is "How to get more views on YouTube". However, since we wrote a list, it didn't make sense to use that in the list H1. So we used a tight variation instead.

Also, don't be afraid to use conjunctions and stop words to make things sound natural.

Do H1 Tags convincing

H1 Tags need to be descriptive. This is of course. However, if you write titles for blog posts, they have to be persuasive enough to attract clicks.

How do you create a compelling post title?

Before thinking of using any of these blog post title generators, consider the purpose of your post. If it exists to attract organic traffic from search engines, and yours CMS Uses page titles for H1s and title tags. The post title must be written for search engine users.

How do you know what they want?

Be inspired by the top results for your target keyword.

For example, if we look for "SEO Techniques “, it is clear that seekers want to be actionable and effective SEO Techniques to help improve search traffic.

We can use this information to create a compelling page title (H1) for our contribution.

By doing SEO World this is known as optimization for search intent.

In conclusion, let's answer some frequently asked questions H1 Keywords.

H1 Tags can be as long as you want, but like most CMSUse the page title for both H1 and title tag, it is best to keep page titles short (<70 characters) to avoid truncating title tags.
